Yes, the heat from burning the coal boils water to create steam. The steam is then used to turn a turbine. The spinning turbine is now your mechanical energy which is usually directly connected to the generator which then creates electricity.
All power plants are basically the same. Something coal, oil, etc, is used to heat water to steam. That steam is then used to power turbines that are use to turn generators
